I think it's also another example of how people confuse propriety and morality. Wearing a (BYU-approved) swimsuit to church (which would reveal more skin than this guy has) would not be immoral. It would, however, be improper. Even if you could somehow construe Hardy's behavior to be inappropriate, I don't see how you get from there to it being sinful.

Yeah, he comes across as one of those people you want to feel sorry for until they make it crystal clear how unclear they are about that “separation between church and state” business.

Heh. He’s a kid and a product of American education. I probably shouldn’t point and mock at HIM for that.

Eugene, I think what I found most unsettling about the church’s position was this:

“conduct unbecoming a member of the church.”

What does that MEAN and how do you define it? Can we say “Paul H. Dunn,” boys and girls? I knew you could.

Yeah, he comes across as one of those people you want to feel sorry for until they make it crystal clear how unclear they are about that “separation between church and state” business. Still, it is unsettling that such silliness would raise such hackles. That “any church discipline is the result of actions not beliefs” makes you wonder how “beliefs” came to get such short shrift in a church.

My only issue with Hardy at the moment is this:

“I just feel like my right to free speech is being violated.”

Yeah. Kid. Go back and read the part where you’re free from retribution for saying what you want. Can’t find it? Oh, that’s right. It’s not there.

If you want to play around with the Disneyland image, you go ahead and do that. When Disneyland comes knocking on your door for their copyright back, suck it up and take it like a man.
